Capital of Zimbabwe, on the Mashonaland
plateau, about 1,525 m/5,000 ft above sea
level; population (1982) 656,000. It is the
centre of a rich farming area (tobacco and
maize), with metallurgical and food
processing industries. The British occupied
the site in 1890 and named it Fort Salisbury
in honour of Lord Salisbury, then prime
minister of the UK. It was capital of the
Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland 1953-63.
