  1. Capital of Zimbabwe, on the Mashonaland
  2. plateau, about 1,525 m/5,000 ft above sea
  3. level; population (1982) 656,000. It is the
  4. centre of a rich farming area (tobacco and
  5. maize), with metallurgical and food
  6. processing industries. The British occupied
  7. the site in 1890 and named it Fort Salisbury
  8. in honour of Lord Salisbury, then prime
  9. minister of the UK. It was capital of the
  10. Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland 1953-63.
